Meet Luna! Luna, a sweet 5 year old, was abandoned in an apartment when our rescue team found her and brought her to the safety of our sanctuary care in 2013.
It didn’t take long for Luna to be adopted into a loving, responsible home. Sadly, she was recently returned when her dad became ill and couldn’t care for her any longer. Her gratitude that we came to her aid once again was deeply profound. Our veterinarians found Luna to now have a mild Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, or a heart murmur, causing a thickening of the walls of the heart.
We are thankful no medication is needed at this time, and only biannual veterinary visits and a yearly echocardiogram are required. Her loud purrs and chirpy strolls around the cat room fill our hearts up and will continue to do so until she meets her adopter!

Luna is doing well, and her health is stable, said mom Robyn. “After another productive visit to the PHC, Luna is doing better again,” she reported. “Luna is limited in her motions and sleeps a lot more these days, but she still loves her couch time while we’re watching TV. Luna continues to be living a good life with the support of the PHC staff and the generosity of her sponsors. Go Team Luna!”

Luna is not as mobile as she used to be due to some arthritis, but after a visit to the Pet Health Centers, she was prescribed some medication that is helping. Mom Robyn is eternally grateful for the support: “Once again, the Animal League America family has been amazing. With the PHC staff on her side, her health is the best it can be.” And happily for Luna, she has been spoiled with extra delivery envelopes and canvas bags in every room – still her favorite napping surface!

Luna is having a stretch of stable health, and thankfully doing well on her special food and medication for her kidney issues. That gives Luna more time to stay on top of mom Robyn’s deliveries, literally! “When we get a box delivered, she sniffs it and rubs her face on the corners. If it is a flat package, she will usually just nap on it,” Robyn said. As ever, Luna’s family is grateful for the generosity and kindness from all her Sponsors.
November 2022
Luna has been making lots of trips to the Pet Health Centers with mom Robyn this year, including treatment for what turned out to be a tooth abscess. “With everyone at PHC caring about Luna, from appointment scheduling to technicians and vets understanding my concerns,” Robyn said, “Luna is always in great hands.” This girl is all about her food, and loves lounging on her screened-in porch. “We feel so blessed with Luna, and all who know her think she’s special too!”
June 2022
Luna is doing much better after being diagnosed with kidney disease in 2021. Mom, Robyn, reported, that she enjoys her new diet and has gained a little weight back. Luna also has a new favorite place to curl up — a cardboard microwave oven made out of her favorite scratching post material. “We are so fortunate to have her and that she made it through the recent health scare,” said Robyn. “With the amazing staff at Animal League America, and with the kindness and generosity of her sponsors, we will have many more anniversaries with our best girl.”
March 2022
Luna weathered a tough bout of illness but had the support of many people to pull her through. Diagnosed with pancreatitis, Luna needed emergency treatment at Animal League America. It was a week full of worry, but her mom, Robyn, reported, “The medical team left me speechless with their amazing care and concern in helping Luna recover. I received daily calls where they gave me information and comforted me.” Luna is home now and doing well, and will continue to be monitored. Robyn can’t say enough about how much she appreciates the “extraordinary kindness and generosity from Animal League America staff and Sponsors who helped a very sick and beloved family member recover and return home.”

Luna’s mom, Robyn, told us that Luna was an excellent study partner for her human sister who graduated high school earlier this year. “Luna was a constant and helpful companion, and it would have been much more difficult for her human sister to push through remote school without Luna’s steady presence and unconditional love.” A prolific napper, Luna has found a new favorite place to curl up. “Luna no longer naps on a manila envelope, but has found a reusable, orange cotton bag to love,” Robyn said. Recently, Luna was briefly hospitalized at our Pet Health Centers for a bout with pancreatitis. She was released with some medications and a new special diet. “Thanks to the wonderful doctors and technicians there, my baby is on the mend. It’s always a comfort to know that Luna and I are a part of the wonderful NSALA family.”

Luna continues to enjoy having her family around, especially her human sister, who she loves to join during her remote classes. Despite having lots of comfortable options, Luna’s mom, Robyn, reports, “Luna’s favorite place to sit and nap continues to be a large, bubbled manila envelope.” Luna is doing well, and Robyn is tremendously grateful for all the support. Says Robyn, “It’s such a comfort to know that the incredible Pet Health Centers and Pet Sponsors are so caring and giving to this amazing member of our family.”
March 2021
Luna’s family returned to work and school safely after the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic was over, which left Luna home alone regularly during the day. Needless to say, she was extremely vocal about it. Sometimes Luna would even put love before food and not immediately trot to her bowl when a family member returned home. Fortunately for Luna, her human sister’s school shifted back to fully remote last winter. The feline-human siblings have become even closer. Whether Luna comes upstairs on her own, or gets carried like a baby, she’ll spend the day with her sister while she attends virtual classes. Luna falls asleep on her sister’s bed and then promptly gets covered with a blanket. It’s truly a wonderful relationship for both of them. Her family says she’s a simple girl with simple needs and oh so loving. Thankfully, Luna has not had any medical issues in quite a while. That’s in part because of the wonderful care she receives at the Pet Health Centers at Animal League America. Due to Luna’s generous and caring sponsors, she will always be well taken care of.

Luna laps up the extra attention she’s been receiving since her family members have been home due to the challenges this year has presented to us all. Her human sister has especially benefited from her extra time with Luna who became her “classmate” during all of the distance learning sessions. Although Luna doesn’t usually like to be picked up, she allowed herself to be carried so the two of them could sit together for school work. They have become very close and Luna has been a great source of comfort to her during this uncertain period. Mom, Robyn, took Luna for her yearly echocardiogram in June. The results of the exam showed no progression of her hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She had bloodwork which indicated an elevated level in one of her kidneys. The doctor felt that it could be caused by the stress of the car ride and procedures but will keep an eye on these results. Luna’s folks appreciate their amazing Animal League America family. From the entire medical staff to Luna’s kind and generous Sponsors, everyone contributes to her health and happiness.

Luna is such a sweet, clever girl who is very low maintenance. For Luna, small things come in big packages. Her parents recently received an order in the mail delivered in a big manila bubble wrap envelope. Knowing one of Luna’s favorite things is to rest on paper bags, her mom, Robyn, placed this envelope on the floor next to her. “She sniffed it, walked around it, and then fell asleep on it. She absolutely loved it, exclaimed Robyn. In February, the family celebrated Luna’s “Gotcha Day,” the day of her adoption. They can hardly believe she’s been with them only three years. She’s such a big part of the family that it just feels like she’s always been there. Luna was scheduled for her yearly echocardiogram recently. When they checked with the Pet Health Centers, the veterinarian said that, since she had such great results from the last two and in light of the COVID-19 health crisis, they could wait until it was safer for them to come in. “The medical staff there are concerned about us and our pets,” said Robyn. “We are so blessed to have her and greatly appreciate her Sponsors, who we consider to be a part of her family.”
March 2020
For her 8th birthday, Luna’s family bought her a new corrugated scratcher since she enjoyed the old one so much that it was in pieces. She’s been in good health and she continues to eat well. The family found a new healthy treat that Luna loves — it’s a combination of chicken bits and gravy. When it’s taken out, she runs over and, for a few seconds, will stand up and put her front paws on the kitchen cabinet. Robyn said they recently decided to open up the cat door to the basement and give Luna more of the house to explore. She is feeling independent and seems to enjoy having more space to roam. Of course she’s found a chair to nap on in the basement too! Luna’s family greatly appreciates her kind and generous Sponsors and are very thankful to have everyone as part of Luna’s family.
November 2019
Recently, Luna was having some regular bouts of sneezing so Luna’s mom, Robyn, thought it best to bring her to the Pet Health Centers at North Shore Animal League America to have her checked out. The veterinarian gave her a thorough exam and did a chest x-ray because of her heart murmur. The x-ray was clear. The doctor thought Luna was having a mild environmental allergic reaction and that she would be fine. The vet recommended no “porch time” for a week and, as expected, Luna stopped sneezing. Luna’s family has noticed that she has a funny behavior before she drinks. She taps her paw in the bowl and then licks her paw. It’s very cute. Then she dives in for a big drink. Robyn says that the medical care Luna receives is the best and, as always, that the family greatly appreciates the support and generosity of her Sponsors. She’s a wonderful girl and words can’t express how much we love Luna.
July 2019
Luna’s family feels so blessed to “have this treasure in our lives.” They celebrated Luna’s second “Gotcha Day” and can’t believe that she’s been with them for two years already. Luna was excited to receive a new catnip pepper and some homemade boiled chicken! Luna’s mom, Robyn, says “It seems like yesterday that this little shy girl, who did not even know how to use the stairs, found us and came home to stay.” Luna is scheduled for her yearly checkup and her echocardiogram soon. Her mom confessed that she still “gets a little nervous about the echocardiogram,” but she feels that Luna is in the best hands. Her exceptional care at Animal League America’s Pet Health Centers is possible because of the generosity and kindness of her Sponsor family. “We are so fortunate to have you as part of Luna’s extended family,” declared Robyn.
March 2019
Luna celebrated her second Christmas with her family, even gracing the annual holiday card. This once-abandoned Tabby is now the object of constant love and attention. She spent much of the winter napping on the heating vent in the dining room, curled on top of her favorite object: a paper bag. Luna’s health continues to be good, and she hasn’t needed to visit our Pet Health Center for several months. “We’re thankful for the kindness and generosity of Luna’s Sponsors,” mom Robyn said. “We’re so blessed with this wonderful girl and so fortunate to be part of the Animal League America family.”
November 2018
Luna finds that the best part of autumn is watching falling leaves and the squirrel activity in her backyard. When her human family is outside,
she watches the entertainment from her cat perch by the front window. Her mom, Robyn, said it’s so sweet to see her inquisitive but calm reaction to the many squirrels getting ready for winter. Her family also discovered another unique habit of Luna’s – sitting on paper and plastic bags when
they return home from grocery shopping! No matter where the bags are moved, she will always find them and plop herself down on them and take ownership. During a recent trip to our Pet Wellness Centers, Luna was given a fantastic report! “I always feel speechless when it comes to writing these updates for Luna’s Sponsor family. She continues to be medically provided for through their generosity and kindness,” Robyn said. “They are part of Luna’s family, making sure she has everything she needs and deserves to have a healthy life. We are so blessed with this wonderful girl and so fortunate to be part of the Animal League America family.”
March 2018
Luna has now been home with her new family for a full year! She had many amazing firsts in 2017 according to her mom, Robyn, including her first of many Christmas holidays, several visits to her friends at Animal League America’s Pet Health Center for checkups and dental procedures, and of course many scrumptious snacks and treats for being such a good girl.” Because of the generous supporters of our Pet Sponsor Program, Luna receives everything she needs in order to live a great life while brightening the lives of her family. Thank you!
December 2017
We’re happy to report that Luna is as happy and healthy as ever! Luna loves her screened porch so much that as soon as someone is downstairs in the morning, she goes right to the door to be let out. “During the night when we are all sleeping, she picks up one of her many burlap mice in her mouth and walks around the house meowing. She will eventually bring them upstairs, and I find at least three every morning in our bedroom. She thinks she’s bringing us gifts, but Luna is the real gift,” Robyn said. “We are forever grateful and indebted to Animal League America and
her amazing sponsor parents for opening up their hearts and providing everything she needs.
September 2017
The 5-year-old green-eyed beauty is finally home and in the care of a wonderful family who adores her! Taking some time to adjust when she first arrived in her new home, Luna steadily warmed up and quickly made her way into the hearts of her new human friends. Luna’s mom, Robyn, says Luna explores, sits on their laps or next to them on the couch, and is comfortable sleeping everywhere in the house. She was nervous to look outside at first, but now sits by the front glass door and watches the world go by. She’s quickly learning that wand toys and burlap mice are a lot of fun to play with, and her greatest joy is her home’s large screened-in porch. Afternoons in there make for great naps and bird and squirrel watching. “I promise to make Luna’s previous life a distant memory now that she is in her forever home,” Robyn says. “With Animal League America’s generosity and kindness, Luna’s special food and care, including yearly echocardiograms for her heart murmur, are provided for. We are ever so grateful and indebted to the organization, as well as her sponsor parents, for opening up their hearts and providing her with everything she needs.”
June 2017
When Luna was selected for the Pet Sponsor Program, those who love her rejoiced! Luna’s life has had so many obstacles, and her road to adoption has been a very bumpy one. Her heart issue was minor; her difficulty adjusting to shelter life proved to be her greatest challenge. One fateful day, a woman came in to consider adopting an adult cat after losing a longtime pet. An introduction to Luna led to instant enchantment. Luna’s story moved her so much that she was back that same afternoon to introduce the kitty to her two teenagers. They were every bit as shy as Luna and had a great depth of understanding how quiet brings comfort to those who are easily overwhelmed. A perfect match was made. Having familiar people there to pass Luna to her new family helped her adjust quickly to a new life. Luna was cuddling on the couch that first evening. Her new home has a summer screened in room that is every cat’s dream. She has a beautiful cat tree and wonderful toys to fi ll her life, but most importantly, she has a loving family who understands her. She could not have found a home more suited for her. Thank you to the Pet Sponsor Program for eliminating obstacles for an otherwise overlooked pet.
