Caring for Animals is All in the Family
When she was just four years old, Mel and Rochelle Spielman’s daughter, Bari, announced that she wanted to be a “doggie doctor.” The news did not necessarily come as a surprise to her mom and dad, who, during their 55-year marriage have always had a love for animals, sharing their home with an assortment of rabbits, birds, and, of course, dogs, including their current companion, a five-year-old German Shepherd named Hunter.
In 1987, Bari made good on her dream to become a veterinarian. Today, Dr. Bari Spielman is a specialist board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, practicing in Waltham, Mass. Early in her career, Dr. Spielman had occasion to collaborate with our veterinary team at Animal League America and shared her positive impressions with her parents. Her enthusiastic “endorsement” only strengthened their faith in our mission.
For the Spielmans, Animal League America’s history as a pioneer in the no-kill shelter movement is crucial. “It is extremely important for an animal shelter to be a no-kill shelter,” they say. “When we give to an organization, we focus on the fact that the major part of our donation is spent meaningfully.”

The Spielmans are also interested in our ongoing efforts to rescue puppies and adult dogs from mass breeding facilities, also known as puppy mills. “We know that North Shore Animal League America has rescued many puppies from puppy mills, nurtured these rescued animals back to good health, and prepared them for adoption. There is now hope for these animals to be placed in loving homes. It gives us great pleasure to know that our donations will help to give these and many other animals a better life.”
Like all of our donors, the Spielmans wish there were a way to save them all. Thanks to their commitment and generosity during many years, the Spielmans, and donors like them, are making sure that Animal League America can continue working to make that wonderful wish a reality.
